NIGHT 221 – THE STORY OF KING SHAHRIMAN AND HIS SON QAMAR AL ZAMAN

Marco Polo, a young impressionable boy full of fascination for the world, travels with his father to the East. He gets lost in the Himalayan mountains during an avalanche and is rescued by some monks, who restore him to health in their monastery. While recovering, somewhere between sleep and dreaming, he awakes in a haze and glimpses a monk in meditation, who then appears to rise slowly from the ground… Marco is not sure if he is still asleep or dreaming so he strains to look closer at the wondrous levitating monk, then falls back exhausted on the bed himself.

At the end of his life, on his deathbed, even after the release of his book of travels, he says: “I haven’t told you half of what I have seen.”

So we can only guess at the other wonders he witnessed. This is my favourite scene from the epic Marco Polo film (1982, Kenneth Marshall).
