NIGHT 152 – THE STORY OF THE FALCON AND THE BIRDS OF PREY

Preparing a brushes order for packaging and shipping for @_mobeenakhtar_

This is how I do it – first sort brushes and especially put the Clouds brushes with their respective flags. When customers receive them I encourage them to write on the raw wood handles exactly what the brush is for, ie customise them yourself and make them yours (eg: miniature outlines/fine detail etc – or whatever works for you). Then stick on packaging stickers. I found that aluminium tubes work best as they are lightest and strongest, as I have a lot of international orders esp to the US and this is the only way they won’t arrive bent (as one did, before I figured out the packaging hah!)

Then get ready the wax for seals

NIGHT 151 – THE STORY OF THE FLEA AND THE MOUSE

View looking out from our opium bed into the interior. My husband added strategic lighting to make it all look ‘floating’ and magical.

His interior is based on leather, brass, paintings and gold. The painting is my part. The dome is just seen on the ceiling of the opium bed and there is another painted dome I did for the room’s ceiling. Work in progress

NIGHT 150 – THE STORY OF THE MAN AND THE SNAKE

Opium bed update

We sourced a real antique opium bed frame bottom and touched up the gilding ourselves

Also known as a Chinese marriage bed but more famous as ‘opium bed’ since opium would be smoked inside in the past

Sleeps 2 inside

And now has a pull-out full double bed underneath so now sleeps 4 (families welcome!)

The step leading to the bed inside also doubles as a sitting bench

All my husband’s hard work including his contemporary take on the moon gate frame and leather, brass, suede and gold! I did the revolving dome inside and have yet to paint the last bit of patterns on the side of the bed frames

NIGHT 148 – THE STORY OF THE WATERFOWL AND THE TORTOISE

My brushes are not designed to only look good, they are working tools designed to be used. You see lacquered brush handles a lot but I insist on plain raw wood handles as it improves grip and you can really feel what you’re doing with the tools. Yes, it does mean they get a bit messy after a while. Use them, even write on them to remind you what specific technique they’re for or whether they are gold-only (something you can’t easily do with lacquered handles) get them dirty (and clean up at the end, take good care of them!) The main point of tools is to use them, not so they stagnate on a display shelf as they are not jewellery. I also find beauty in the simplicity anyway

NIGHT 144 – THE STORY OF KING UMAR ‘IBN AL-NUMAN AND HIS FAMILY

High chair facing the light – found this was the best way to ink in the lines of my next miniature painting rooms within rooms architecture in shell gold. Since gold is shiny and reflective the extra height helped to see what I was doing. Ikea high chair so convenient for art reasons!
