Feather marbling and feather brushes (and Water, Clouds and Rocks brushes)… this ebru marbling was done with combs; the calligraphic Fire feather brush could also be used to finely manipulate marbling. Dragged delicately, it can give different and experimental effects
The Archer is not part of the Major Arcana. I am expanding the idea of the Major Arcana to include other archetypes and motifs. All part of the all-encompassing story of life as it unfolds just like the tales of the 1001 Nights ~
Is believing in djinn 🧞♀️ 🧞♂️ or the existence of magic (or indeed simply allowing space for unknown possibilities in your heart) a mental health issue? Hmmmmmm…..
For Caspian, the 1001 Nights, a thousand nights and a night of artworks, paintings and stories. A baby, then a toddler and now a child, they grow fast and this has also been encapsulated in the initial images in the series.
For Kashi, the Tarot, wrapped up during pregnancy in the 1001 Nights as a single night, a story within that story with its own rabbit warren of stories – for me the Tarot is a journey through life, from the childlike Fool travelling through the Major Arcana to eventually gain the World. Part of, not separate to, the main story, yet equally a standalone work in itself, the Tarot tangent is a kind of marginalia – justly important and without which the main story would not be as deliciously rich.
The Precious Cargo is not part of the Major Arcana. I am expanding the idea of the Major Arcana to include other archetypes and motifs. All part of the all-encompassing story of life as it unfolds just like the tales of the 1001 Nights ~
The little rock becomes anthropomorphised into a lion-man (who seems to be speaking in soundcloud-style decibels… that purple biro is just me diagramming to my students what rendering looks like in close-up!)
Anthropomorphic rocks were a stylistic feature of Persian and Indian miniature painting: when the rocks were being painted, the artist would often add little faces and characters to give the rocks life and spirit. Touches of whimsy from 500 years ago. I spent much of my MA studying these, I love them!
That is actually also a place name, I’ve always loved the name: Little Rock, Arkansas! Imagine being from there or living there (where do you live? I’m from Little Rock, Arkansas!)
It’s still romantic and dreamy in my imagination as I’ve never been there!
👩🏽/👩🏻👶🏽👦🏽🧓🏼/🎅🏼 There are no emojis for mixed families; myself and the kids are mixed ourselves and as usual are not represented at all, and also no emoji for my husband, who has a young face but grey hair and grey beard! Santa is the closest – sorry!
