Vanishing fore-edge painting is a traditional English book art. This island really loves books and so do I! This unique art began in 10th century Europe. You can even get books that can be fanned multiple ways (forwards, backwards and diagonally) and there is a different painting on each, so 4 paintings on one book edge! Truly amazing.

There was also a niche tradition of painting ‘gentleman’s pictures’ on the edges of books, ie. paintings of nude ladies, of course… 😉

Revealing this conceit is like magic when you present it to people in real life. I’ll look into doing more for my PhD including hiding several paintings in one fore-edge, to be revealed depending on the way you fan the book! Exciting possibilities for the future ~

(You buy the dangerous chemicals online, mix and apply onto 300gsm cold-pressed watercolour paper separately in dark room; once dried and safe you get kid to do placements of pre-gathered objects on the paper and expose to full strong sunshine; excitedly wait until colour change c.5 mins and then wash off under tap until blue and white prints appear then let dry)

The two famous Siyah Qalam paintings, the Bull and the Lion, with my addition of the Matador as mediator/instigator/supreme commander/boss/provocateur? flying in between on a flying carpet instead of the traditional red fabric held in his hands. It’s about balance – all 3 elements are perfectly balance, in equilibrium, and there is order in the universe because the Matador keeps things in check, flying in between the two giants. If the oscillation were to suddenly stop, the world would end ~
